Abalone shells, "Paua" are often used in smudging rituals, not only because they are practical in that they catch the hot cinders that fall away from the smudging stick after it has burnt, but also because they are a beautiful gift from the ocean. Abalone shells are a thick seashell which shimmers with gorgeous iridescent colors. As the abalone grow they begin to feed on seaweed, primarily kelp. Some species of seaweed cause the baby abalone to put on various colors of shell. As the abalone grows it adds new shell to the outer rim causing the shell to increase in diameter and a change in food can be seen in the resulting shell. 

According to metaphysical beliefs, Abalone is associated with the energy of the ocean, love, life and flow. Many believe Abalone shells hold the energy of the ocean and bring a strong calming and healing energy.
