Amethyst

The color purple has since symbolized wealth and prosperity since the beginning of time. From only nobility affording the expensive pigmentation to purple gems adorning crowns, it is not surprising that Amethysts were gifted to the Greek gods. Greek mythology claims that titans would gift the god of wine Dionysys amethyst to help ground and keep his mental state sane after he would indulge in alcohol. As a result kings and the nobles of the Greecian empire would encrust their jewelry with amethyst as a status symbol.

Amethyst is known for its rich purple colors that come from iron impurities and the darker the color the more potent the iron deposits. However that does not mean that amethyst is just purple. There are variations of amethyst that come in pink, black, and even green. Beyond the color there are even different variations of amethyst, such as chevron amethyst and spirit quartz. Amethyst itself is a variation of the larger subsection of minerals called quartz.

Amethysts are found around river beds or areas with flowing water. Amethysts are formed by the pressure from volcanic rock and lava. As a result they are usually embedded into rocks. However they are still found all around the world. Most famously though, they are found in Brazil; a special variation called brazilian chevron amethyst are usually produced here. However you can find them throughout the United States as well, including Pennsylvania.

Similar to what the Greeks claim, many believe that amethysts help with sobriety. Amethyst is associated with the crown chakra and is known to help with bringing peace and calm energy into one's life. It is helpful with grounding and self healing. Amethyst is a powerful utensil when used for manifestation and meditation. Those with anger issues or anxiety should carry amethyst around in their pockets or bags. Amethyst has also been given to couples upon their 33nd wedding anniversary. 33 is a divine protection number and amethyst is also known to be good for protection against negativity and evil energies.

Due to these same reasons they are popular crystals to decorate alters with. They are also used by mediums and spiritualists during readings to help clear their minds and help them connect to the spiritual realm. Their purposes go beyond emotional and mental, as they are believed to help alleviate aches, pains, and migraine.

Amethysts are the February gem stones and are great gifts for Aquarius and Pisces signs. Similarly, they are great for those who want to simulate their creativity and spirituality. Not only are these crystals beautiful to look at, but they are great for multiple different purposes. So get them when you stop by Harry’s World on South Street!
